BIRD: linking the biodiversity community

The BEN Environment Awards are designed to highlight environmental initiatives and achievements in the Ballarat region. Nominations are open to any organisation, group or individual. An independent panel judges the nominations.

There has been a tremendous amount of work done in the Ballarat region to improve the environment. Activities include weed control, revegetation works, salinity control, stream rehabilitation, litter clean-up days and many educational programs involving schools. Landcare groups number many in this area and some really exciting projects are currently underway or planned by groups. It is important that people actively working for the environment are acknowledged. They provide the inspiration, innovation and leadership for others to follow. With the BEN Environment Awards we celebrate not just the winners but everyone's efforts in helping to create a healthier environment.

Award winners at the 2004 forum.

Gold Award: For outstanding environmental achievement. Nominations in this category can relate to current initiatives or continuous achievement over a number of years.

School Award: For environmental achievement.

Landcare Award: For environmental achievement. Open to landcare groups, 'friends of' and other environmental groups.

Business Award: For environmental achievement.

Community Group Award: For environmental achievement.

Max Brooke Recognition Award: For environmental encouragement.

Individual Award: For environmental achievement.

BEN Hall of Fame: The Hall of Fame recognises individuals who have contributed an outstanding and sustained effort. All Gold Award winners are automatically inducted into the Hall of Fame. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to retrospectively acknowledge outstanding environmental achievements of individuals in the region.

The inaugural awards were announced at Landfest on 22 March 1998.
The 2000 Environment Awards were presented on 19 March 2000.
In 2002 the award presentation was held in conjunction with the Weaving the Web Biodiversity Conference
The 2004 Environment Awards were presented on 5 June 2004, in conjunction with the BEN 2004 forum.
The 2006 Environment Awards were presented on 10th June 2006.
