There are many surveys being conducted across the South West, wouldn't it be nice to know what is going on, just for interest's sake or maybe you would like to help. If you are responsible for a survey or have a short summary result from a survey please list details under the appropriate heading.

Species: Growling Grass Frog Summary results 2007/2008 in Wimmera and Corangamite Catchments from surveys conducted at 120 historical and newly found sites. Results summary to 2008

Species: Striped Legless Lizard Summary results from Spring 2008 surveys. Over the four years prior to 2008 each survey grid has been monitored an average of 14 times, which equates to about 4200 grids checked and about 210,000 tiles being lifted. The Striped Legless Lizard has been detected at 73 of 330 survey grids, >50% which are located on road reserves. Grassland reserves had about 30% and private property about 20% occurrence. The majority of these sites were previously unrecorded populations and hence the known distribution of the species has now been significantly expanded.

Species: Eastern Barred Bandicoot population monitoring for 2008 was focused at three sites; Hamilton Community Parklands, Mt Rothwell (near the You Yangs) and Mooramong. Good results were obtained at Hamilton Community Parklands where predator control is achieved through protective fencing. Since the release of 30 animals in 2007 numbers expanded to where 50 individuals were trapped in October 2008. Unfortunately in January 2009 only 23 were trapped, possibly due to a reduction in food availability.

At Mt Rothwell (which has predator proof fencing) Eastern-barred Bandicoot numbers were stable through 2008 and into 2009. On-going monitoring will look at competition with other species such as the Southern Brown Bandicoot.

At Mooramong (which has no protective fencing) numbers have declined through 2008 but there is evidence of breeding even though only 6 animals were recorded.

As of February 2009 about 17 breeding pairs are being maintained to provide off-spring which can be used to supplement existing release sites; these are located at Monarto Zoological Park, South Australia, Kyabram Fauna Park and Melbourne Zoo.

Species: Ancient Greenling Transect lines to monitor Ancient Greenling adult damselflies were placed at Long Swamp in Discovery Bay Coastal Park December 2009. In excess of 40 adults were noted at this site. Assistance from Portland DSE and community members has located another two wetlands within the southwest region where the damselfly has been sighted. Surveys will continue to February 2011.

Anyone who has sighted the Ancient Greenling adults at any wetland is asked to contact Di Crowther on 039450 8613.

[edit] Your ideas

Do you have any thoughts on what threatened species or communities need to be surveyed? Have you noticed a decline in a particular area, maybe there has been some threatening process impacting on the species or habitat area that is of interest to you. If you have ideas please list here with your contact phone number, there is no guarantee something will happen straight away but at least if people are aware of an issue it may be picked up by a CMA, DSE, a conservation or landcare group or a University, all of which could be involved with surveys.

Species; Amphibians

Location; Western Victoria

Issue; Species decline

Contact; Ray Draper 5331 3305 or 0427 803 338

Species: Hairy Anchor Plant

Location: Lal Lal, SE of Ballarat

Issue: A local group have a population of HAP under their care and would like to know more about the species. Is anyone working on this species or able to help out with information?

Of particular interest is the reproduction/propagation of this species. There is concern that something may be inhibiting the population from reproducing.

Contact: Geoff Hewitt on (03) 5341 7671, or you can leave a message here.

[edit] Your help required

People undertaking surveys often have difficulty in covering areas that they would like to, particularly as some surveys require multiple days or nights sometimes with many stations or coverage required over a large area. If you are planning a survey and think your survey could be improved with assistance from others (provided it is allowable under permit conditions) if appropriate, then please list your survey here for others to see. There are some very knowledgable and experienced people in our community who may feel that they can contribute.

Species; Brolga

Location; across South West Victoria

Activity; surveys are carried out each year during the breeding season to locate nest sites, describe nesting habitat and document annual breeding dates (nesting, egg laying, hatching and fledging) including determine the success of a minimum of 20 nests annually. The survey also aims to count the number of adult, juvenile and first year birds at flocking sites each year and determine the population size. If you are in a position to record sightings of Brolga flocking and nesting it would provide valuable assistance in expanding the scope of these surveys.

Date; anytime (Flocking Summer-Autumn, breeding winter-spring)

Contact; Richard Hill 03 55542302

Species; Growling Grassfrog

Location; across South West Victoria

Activity; If you see or hear a Growling Grassfrog, or if you are interested in participating in the frog census, please contact the project coordinator. All information received will be greatly appreciated.

Date; 2005 current project

Contact; Ray Draper (03) 5331 3305 or 0427 803 338

(1) able to report when the moths are flying, or (2) willing to visit designated sites to look for them.
